Core ideas to know

Learn the relationships, not a string of isolated definitions. These are the facts that let you reason through unfamiliar wording.

  • A category relationship links an example to its class: femur is to bone as aorta is to artery.
  • A part–whole relationship links a component to the object it forms: page to book, chamber to heart.
  • A function relationship links a tool or structure to what it does: thermometer to measure.
  • A cause–effect relationship links an event to its typical result, while sequence only tells which comes first.
  • A collocation is a conventional pairing such as administer medication; familiarity alone does not make two words synonymous.

A reliable way to answer

Use the same short process every time so the wording of the question does not decide your method for you.

  1. Put the first pair into a precise sentence: “A ___ is a kind of ___” or “___ is used to ___.”
  2. Keep the direction fixed; part-to-whole is not the same as whole-to-part.
  3. Apply the same sentence to each candidate pair.
  4. Choose the pair that preserves both the relationship type and its specificity.

Question 1 of 3

Stethoscope is to listen as thermometer is to

Answer Choices for Question 1

View the Answer and Explanation

Correct answer: A. measure

The relationship is instrument to function: a stethoscope is used to listen and a thermometer is used to measure. Temperature is what it measures, not the parallel action.

Distinctions that earn marks

IdeaWhat it meansDo not confuse it with
Category member One example belongs to a class Part, which helps make a whole
Function What something is used to do Description, what it is like
Collocation Words conventionally used together Synonym, words with similar meanings

Read every word in the stem before choosing. HESI distractors are often true statements that answer a nearby question rather than the one that was asked.

Terms to know

Semantic relationship
A meaning-based connection between words.
Analogy
A comparison built from two equivalent relationships.
Collocation
A pair or group of words that conventionally occur together.

Question 2 of 3

Which pair has the same relationship as “alveolus : lung”?

Answer Choices for Question 2

View the Answer and Explanation

Correct answer: B. nephron : kidney

An alveolus is a component of a lung, and a nephron is a component of a kidney. Kidney to nephron reverses the part-to-whole direction.

Key points

  • Name the relationship in a complete sentence before comparing choices.
  • Preserve direction as well as relationship type.
  • Prefer the same level of specificity in both halves of an analogy.

Question 3 of 3

Why are “administer” and “medication” associated but not synonyms?

Answer Choices for Question 3

View the Answer and Explanation

Correct answer: A. They are conventionally paired but name an action and its object.

The words commonly occur together as verb and object, creating a collocation. They do not share a meaning and therefore cannot substitute for one another.
